Iftar Sponsorships @ QSSC

I doubt I have many readers from my home town, Toronto. But I figured what the heck, I’ll give it a shot and post about it.

The Qur’an and Sunnah Society of Canada is a community run centre/mosque. Its expenses (rent & utilities) are paid entirely from donations, most of which are given by QSSC volunteers themselves. We are not funded by any outside group or organization (foreign governments included), and we do not receive donations from overseas, like some other mosques and centres are fortunate enough to get.

Over the years, it has become our custom to provide food to those who wish to break fast at QSSC during Ramadan. There is a demand for it, so we try to oblige and provide our community with the service. This service, however, doesn’t come without its costs. The praise is Allah’s, when we first started this, we had many donors willing to sponsor these iftars, but the last few years, these contributions have diminished and the centre has had to dip into the donations given to help cover its regular operating expenses to fund the iftars. Last year, according to what I was told today, we had 20-some odd people promise to sponsor iftars, but only had 5 of those promises come through and actually give us the money they promised. This year, from what I’m told, we’ve only received enough to cover 7 days worth of food. This is really sad–especially the part of broken and unfulfilled promises.

In any case, we’re asking for help again with covering the expenses of this initiative. Nothing says that we can’t ask those who don’t live in our community to donate and give support (although, rightfully, those in the community should be stepping up to help support this). Here’s a chance for those willing to earn some extra rewards and good deeds to add to their scales to do so.

Here’s a copy of the email sent out by the QSSC admin to their mailing list. Please spread it, share it, reblog it … whatever you want to do to get the message out.

as-Salam ‘alaikum wa rahmatullah wa barakatuh,

Koran by Heart

A friend of my wife’s sent her this and in turn she sent it to me. I’ve still yet to finish watching it, but I’m in the process of doing so. It’s an HBO documentary titled, Koran by Heart, about the International Holy Koran Competition held in Cairo. The documentary follows the journey of three young kids (from Tajikistan, the Maldives, and Senegal) competing in the competition. Being that this month of Ramadan is also referred to as the month of the Qur’an, I thought it would be good to post and share with those of you who visit my blog (despite its inactivity). Enjoy.

The rest after the break.

Farewell Ramadân, Hope to See You Again Next Year!

With a mixture of both sadness and joy, for those that don’t know already, I’d like to let you know that the religious authorities from a number of different Muslim countries have announced that the crescent of Shawwâl was seen this evening (October 11, 2007); among them: Saudi Arabia, UAE, Kuwait, Qatar, and Bahrain.

Thus, in following the Prophetic statement, «Fast when you see the crescent; if it is obscured to you, then complete thirty days of Sha’bân. Break your fast when you see the crescent; if it is obscured to you then fast thirty days,» today was our last day of the fast and ‘Îd will be tomorrow (Friday, October 12, 2007).

We will be holding the ‘Îd prayer tomorrow morning @ 10am (that means be there at 9:30am, folks!!!) at the Radisson Hotel Toronto East located at 55 Hallcrown Place (Victoria Park Ave. & Consumers Rd.).

Ramadân: the Month of Godliness and Faith

Being that we’re currently in this the blessed month of Ramadân, I thought it would be fitting to post this article when I received it in my inbox this morning courtesy of brother Ibrahim al-Koobee of the Aqeedatus-Salaf yahoogroup (may Allah reward him with good). Due to its general nature, it serves as a good reminder for all of us.

I took the original Arabic from which the article was translated and retranslated it for my blog (you can read the original translation on the English portion of Asaala.com).

Ramadân 2007 to Begin Thursday (Sept. 13)

In accordance with the authentic hadîth from Prophet Muhammad, may Allah send salutations and peace upon him, «Fast when you see the crescent; if it is obscured to you, then complete thirty days of Sha’bân. Break your fast when you see the crescent; if it is obscured to you then fast thirty days,» by Allah’s permission, we will begin fasting on Thursday, September 13, 2007 because the crescent for Ramadân was not reported as beening seen (as far as I know).

Accordingly, we will begin the night prayers (tarâwîh/qiyâm al-lail/tahajjud) tonight (Wednesday, September 12, 2007) @ QSSC. For those in the GTA that wish to join us, the masjid’s address is: 1865B Lawrence Ave. East Scarborough, Ontario.

For more info on timings, etc., please visit www.qssc.org.
