Sunday Mercury Report & Rumours About Abu Usamah Atthahabi

There has been a (sorry excuse for) a news report making the rounds titled, “Birmingham mosque cleric accused of sexual harassment”, which has been posted to a couple of third rate “news” sites. The reports makes mention of some sexual harassment allegations levied against Abu Usamah Atthahabi, may Allah exonerate him and preserve and protect him from his enemies. Both Abu Usamah and his employers, Green Lane Masjid, have issued statements concerning the report. Anyone interested in reading Green Lane’s press release can do so here while Abu Usamah’s video response can be viewed after the jump.

I’ve been told by a friend who first emailed me the report that this sad excuse for journalism has been making the rounds on Twitter, being spread by a brother associated with TROID (who then later deleted the tweet). If this is true, there are truly no words to adequately describe how pathetic and retarded it is, especially for a group of people who claim adherence to the way of the People of Hadîth, who make such a clamour about disparagement and accreditation (jarh and ta’dîl); you would think that they would avoid unverifyable reports coming from completely anonymous sources such as this one like the plague.

There is also another rumour concerning Abu Usamah that is making its rounds. Around dawn this morning, a friend of mine called me to ask me if I had heard anything about Abu Usamah being arrested. Apparently, a mutual acquaintance of ours posted a status update on Facebook saying that Abu Usamah had been arrested. Not too long afterwards, I received a message on WhatsApp from Ali Sabir telling me that another mutual acquaintance of ours had called him this morning to tell him the very same thing, that Abu Usamah had been arrested, and that he was wondering if I had any verification that the rumour was true.

Regarding this, I can say with 100% certainty that this rumour is false and that as of noon (Eastern Standard Time) today, Abu Usamah was chillin’ at his home in Birmingham, UK, safe and sound with his family.

Just a reminder to those people spreading these rumours without verifying them, Allah, mighty and majestic is He, says, «O those who believe, if a sinner came with any news, then verify [it], lest you stike a people in ignorance, then become regretful for what you did» (49:6) and the Prophet, may Allah send salutations and peace upon him, said, «It is enough of a lie for a person to speak of everything he hears.»
