as-Sadlan on Labelling Others

Shaikh Sâlih bin Ghânim as-Sadlân, may Allah protect and preserve him, was asked about some statements that were attributed to him regarding Shaikhs Salmân al-‘Awdah, ‘Â’id al-Qarnî, and Safar al-Hawâlî. He replied with the following comment,

In Allah’s name, the Merciful, the Compassionate.

The praise is Allah’s, Lord of the worlds, and may Allah send salutations upon our Prophet, Muhammad, and upon his family and his companions, collectively.

These words attributed to me, that I say about these shaikhs [that they are] liberals, and they are ‘Â’id al-Qarnî, Salmân al-‘Awdah, and Safar al-Hawâlî. These are my brothers, and I am fully acquainted with them. I say, however, that the people speak about them and this is an error. Dividing the shaikhs into such and such, and into such, for example:  Jâmî, and into Tablîghî, into Ahbâbî or liberal or others from the labels, all of these should not prevail among the students of knowledge, specifically in this land, in which the revivalist call, the call of Shaikh Muhammad bin ‘Abdil-Wahhâb is found.

All of the people of knowledge are entrusted, if Allah, exalted is He, wills, except what is established with certainty, containing no doubt, upon him is either with a [piece of] his writing or with a emphasized statement, and not containing hesitation or other than that, so with it, perhaps also, with it his statement is accepted and abandoned.

Then also, with relation to me, I do not have specialization in knowledge of the labels, specifically, those labels that are in a foreign language, for these we do not recognize their dimensions, but we recognize the Arabic language and its meanings and the variety of its expressions, in this, we have knowledge. As for the foreign languages, then I cite these utterances by way of regret for those who use this thing, for those who say “so and so is sururî, so and so is jâmî, so and so is such, so and so is such, and this call is such and such.

It is befitting that–nay, it is incumbent on the leaders, specifically those concerned with these matters, to hold these [people] responsible for their words and clarify to them it is not for them to speak about this and to stop the likes of these things, and whoever persists upon the likes of this, then he deserves the reward (i.e., the punishment).

    SalafiPublications continues to attack them and accuse Green Lane Mosque of being innovators simply because they’ve had a few connections to Ihya Turath. I’d like to know what the ‘Ulema apart from Sheikh Rabee’ have to say about Ihya Turath.

  4. I would think the sheer number of shaikhs who cooperate with Ihya’ at-Turath al-Islami, in and of itself, would be enough for most to ignore what Shaikh Rabi’ and the other exaggerationist shaikhs say about it.

    For those who require names, however …

    … in Rifqan Ahl as-Sunnah bi Ahl as-Sunnah, Shaikh ‘Abdul-Muhsin refers to this organization without naming them. You can find his mention of them on page 29 of my translation of the book, where the shaikh mentions an organization for which Shaikhs Abdul-Aziz bin Baz and Muhammad bin Uthaimin used to deliver lectures for;

    … according to what I was told by Abdulhaq Ashanti (translator for SalafiManhaj.com), Shaikh Faisal al-Jasim of Kuwait, and a close student of Shaikh Salih al-Fawzan’s, asked al-Fawzan about cooperating with Ihya’ at-Turath al-Islami. al-Fawzan told al-Jasim that he (al-Jasim) knows the organization better and that if he finds benefit in cooperating with them, to do so (or something along those lines). You can verify it with them, if you wish. My memory isn’t the greatest and I could be mistaken;

    … Shaikh Ali al-Halabi has a section about this organization in his book Manhaj as-Salaf as-Salih, in which he explicity states that the organization openly proclaims Salafism and tries to uplift its banner, but like everyone, they are correct at times and mistaken at times in their application and implementation of the call. So while he acknowledges there is reason for criticism, he also affirms that they are Salafi;

    … there are also the other shaikhs that continue to cooperate with the organization, either by delivering lectures for them or by being sent by them to various mosques and Islamic centres in foreign countries in order to propagate Islam. These scholars include Shaikh Adnan Abdul-Qadir, and many of the other shaikhs mentioned by Abu Usamah in his recent talks concerning Spubs and their cohorts.

    As for Shaikh Abdur-Rahman Abdul-Khaliq, I’m pretty sure if you ask many of the Egyptian Salafi shaikhs (such as Abu Ishaq al-Huwaini, Muhammad Hassan, and others), they’ll attest to Abdur-Rahman Abdul-Khaliq’s Salafism. There is also the statement from Shaikh al-Albani that was translated by SPubs, in which he clearly states that Abdur-Rahman Abdul-Khaliq is Salafi, despite his errors in some areas of methodology.

    If this isn’t enough for people to realize that things aren’t always so black and white, then I don’t know what will.

    In all honesty, if people would just ignore the bile and dribble that Spubs and those upon that same mindset and way of thinking (including their shaikhs) spew out, the world would be a lot better off for it. It would also make things a lot better for people like me who would rather spend their time doing other things than having to reply and clarify the retardedness that comes from that lot.
