Shaikh al-‘Ubailân On Testing People & Imposing Opinions On Them

Shaikh ‘Abdullah bin Sâlih al-‘Ubailân was asked,

What is your view regarding testing the people and imposing a statement of the scholars regarding the disparagment of individuals or other than it from the disputed matters among the People of the Sunnah upon the students of knowledge?

The shaikh, may Allah preserve him, answered saying,

This [matter] contains elaboration. As for if the one spoken of was from the imams of heresies and one who the People of the Sunnah do not differ regarding, then it is obligated upon the Muslim to believe what the People of the Sunnah believe about him, otherwise he has deviated from their path, if he has knowledge.

As for if the one spoken of was from the People of the Sunnah and fell into an error in knowledge some of the people of knowledge believe is an exit from the Sunnah for him, then [regarding] this [one], it is not necessary that whoever that was not clarified to or viewed contrary to it (i.e., he held the opposing opinion) blindly follow others regarding him. And whoever believes in making that a requirement for every Muslim has opposed Allah and His messenger, for indeed, the absolute truth and the absolute alliance is not except for Allah’s messenger, upon him be peace. It was said to Ibn ‘Abbâs, “You are upon the religion of ‘Alî or ‘Uthmân,” so he said, “Rather, I am upon the religion of Allah’s messenger, upon him be peace.” It is a path to falling into what the Jews and the Christians fell into; He, exalted is He, said, «The Jews said the Christians are not upon anything, while the Christians said the Jews are not upon anything, while they [both] recite the Book. Likewise, those who do not know said the likes of their statement. Thus, Allah will judge between them in what they used to differ about on the Day of Standing» (2:113).

Jazzakallohu khoyr akhee for ur translation
I’m also doing some translation of the saying of mashaikh to Bahasa Indonesia (Indonesia Language) about imtihaanun naas bil askhaash (testing people with individuals)…

  3. Wa iyyakum, brother Abu Salma.

I’m not sure if you’ve already done so, but in the second edition Rifqan Ahl as-Sunnah bi Ahl as-Sunnah, Shaikh ‘Abdul-Muhsin al-‘Abbad has a chapter near the end of the book (which is taken from al-Hath ‘ala Ittiba’ as-Sunnah wat-Tahdhir min al-Bida’ wa Bayan Khatariha, if I remember correctly) about the heresy (bid’ah) of testing people by individuals, which you may want to translate as well.

You can find a PDF file of the Arabic version of the book here and my English translation of the book here.

alhamdulillah, I have translated that book (al-haththu ‘ala ittiba-is sunnah) about a few years ago…
    Jazzakallaahu khayra yaa Aba Ishaaq…

    Assalamu Alaikum

Dear brothers, could you anyone get me the reference/tahqiq of the following athar the shaikh (hafidhahullah) quoted?

It was said to Ibn ‘Abbâs, “You are upon the religion of ‘Alî or ‘Uthmân,” so he said, “Rather, I am upon the religion of Allah’s messenger, upon him be peace.

  9. Wa ‘alaikum as-salam wa rahmatullah,

You can find the narration in Imam adh-Dhahabi’s Siyar A’lam an-Nubala’ in his biography of Ibn ‘Abbas (radiyallah ‘anhuma); it’s narrated by Ibn Tawus from his father. Don’t know it’s authenticity though. I’ll have to search a bit more to see if I can find that information.

  10. Yusuf says:

    @ibn Abdul Awwal –

    Wa ‘Alaykum as-Salaam wa-Rahmatullahi wa-Barakatuhu,

    Check this link.

    It is found in Al-Ibaanah al-Kubraa (1/355) and al-Sughraa (145), and Sharh Usool ‘Itiqaad Ahl al-Sunnah (1/94).

  11. Ibn Abdul Awwal, if you can find a copy of Shaikh ‘Ali Hasan al-Halabi’s print of al-Ibanah as-Sughra (full title ash-Sharh wal-Ibanah ‘ala Usul as-Sunnah wad-Diyana), the narration is no. 141 and found on pg. 53. He doesn’t comment on it or provide any other references, but according to Shaikh ‘Abdil-‘Aziz bin ‘Abdillah ar-Rajihi in the link provided by Yusuf, which is the shaikh’s explanation of al-Ibanah as-Sughra, the chain for the narration is authentic.

  12. ibn Abdul Awwal says:

  13. Abdullah says:

assalaamu alaikum wa rahmatullah wa barakatuh

Akhi i need the arabic source of the Text, i took a look to the website of the Shaikh but i couldnt found it, can u plz give the arabic source inshaAllah. Because I’ve a lot of trouble with some ppl, who try to convince ppl to push ppl to take all the Statements in Regard to a critiscism and they try to cover it under the principle “the jarh has precedence over the tadil”. Thats why i need this source inshaAllah and other Fataawa as well, if u have got… And a second Thing is, that they fight against ppl who take Fiqhi Positions of Shaikh Ibn Jibrin, I said them that we can take from him, but they said no Shaikh Yahya an-Najmi said no, thats it and everybody who says otherwise is wrong… Jazak Allahu khairan

  14. Wa ‘alaikum as-salam wa rahmatullah wa barakatuh, Abdullah.

The link at the bottom of the post should take you directly to the Arabic text of the verdict. I just checked and it the link still works for me. If your friends read Arabic, just copy the URL and send it to them.

You might also want to send them Shaikh Abdul-Muhsin al-Abbad’s book, Rifqan Ahl as-Sunnah, and show them what the shaikh has to say about Shaikhs Ahmad an-Najmi, Ubaid al-Jabiri, and Rabi al-Madkhali, i.e., that they resemble Shaikh Falih al-Harbi and his exaggeration. You can also find some posts in the comments of a couple of my blog posts (namely Salafism, Do You Really Get It? and What’s the Deal with QSS?!) that specifically deal with Shaikh Abdullah bin Jibrin–look for the comments written by “Yusuf” in particular; he usually posts some great stuff; may Allah reward him immensely.

    Assalamu alaykum wa rahmatullah,

Where can I find a biography of Shaikh ‘Abdullah bin Sâlih al-’Ubailân in English ? I googled his name but did not find much.

    Barak Allaahu fikum.

  17. Wa ‘alaikum as-salam wa rahmatullah wa barakatuh, Abu Sakinah.

Unfortunately, I don’t know of a biography for the shaikh in English. I only know of the one in Arabic that my friend Yusuf posted a link to in the comments section of one of my other blog posts. Unfortunately, I don’t remember which one he posted it under.

  18. Abu Sakinah says:

    Ok no problem, jazakallahu khairan.

  19. Wa iyyakum, brother.

I found the link to the Arabic bio that was posted here. Unfortunately, the site that it was posted on is now closed (the alsaha forums). I’ll try to find it somewhere else, if Allah wills.
