Going Under Cover: the Jewish Women Who Are Taking the Veil

I came across an interesting story on the TimesOnline titled, Going under cover: the Jewish women who are taking the veil, and thought I’d share it with those of you who visit this spot of mine.

From the article:

Several cars slow and one stops when Sarah walks down the street in her home town of Beit Shemesh, an ultra-orthodox Jewish enclave west of Jerusalem.

On this morning, the streets teem with women herding their children to school in the modest garb and head-coverings befitting their religious beliefs. For years, Sarah walked among them similarly dressed, but today a dark cloth is secured across her face, hiding everything save her eyes. It resembles the head-to-toe covering that is associated with religious Muslim women in the Gulf States.

“The full body, or full face covering that people think is only part of the Arab world actually started with Jewish women,” said a woman who asked to be identified by her first initial, M.

“Muslim women are imitating Jews to try to gain God’s favour with modesty. The truth is that the women of Israel are lessening in God’s eyes because the Arabs are more modest in dress. If the Jews want to conquer the Arabs in this land they must enhance their modesty,” added M, who covered her face for over a year, but currently wears just a loose cloak over her garments.

that’s very true but people do ignore facts and claims that muslim women that do wear hijab are being oppressed!

    As Salaamu Alaikum

This article proves that hijaab was something that was practiced by the previous nations before us. For example look at this verse from 1 Corinthians 11:6-10 where it says: “If a woman does not cover her head, she should have her hair cut off; and if it is a disgrace for a woman have her hair cut or shaved off, she should cover her head. A man ought not cover his head, since he is the image and glory of God; but the woman is the glory of man. For man did not come from woman, but woman from man; neither was man created for woman, but woman for man. For this reason and because of the angels, the woman ought to have a sign of authority on her head.”
Unfortunately the Jewish woman in the article claims that the muslim women are copying them to gain Allaah’s Favor, however she is only partially correct. Alhumdullillaah our women do cover to gain Allaah’s Favor which is implementation of Tawheed and not to imitate a people who have for the most part thrown their religion behind their backs to indulge in democracy and the likes of worshipping their desires with out any fear of al-Khaaliq (the Creator).

As for the Muslim women then they have been commanded the following verses to cover:

Unfortunately, many muslim women are following behind the jewish and christian women in not implementing the hijaab. Muhammad alaihis salaam did say that we will follow the ways of the jews and christians to the point that if they were to enter a lizard hole we will follow and in another narration that if they were to have sexual relations with their mother the muslims would do the same.

So whether the muslim women are oppressed for wearing the hijaab or not really isn’t the issue. The issue is submitting to what Allaah and His Messenger came with for those who believe in Allaah and Last Day.

May Allaah Guide us all. Aameen

More muslims cover their head than the jewish so how is that muslims following the jewish?

  4. I believe what the Jewish lady quoted in the article meant was that Muslims are imitating Jewish law, which says that women must cover up. Being that they reject Prophet Muhammad and the Law that he came with, it’s not really that surprising that this woman would think that. Thus, because many Jewish women do not cover up anymore, she says that Muslim women are being favoured more than Jewish women because they cover up, whereas most Jewish women don’t anymore.
