With Ramadân Literally a Short Few Days Away …

… I thought I’d post up a couple of few relevant articles.

The first is by brother Kamil Ahmad, the latest from his blog: Ramadan is Fast Approaching, are you Ready to Receive it?

From the article:

A year has passed and here we are once again at the doorstep of another month of Ramadan. It seems as if it was only yesterday that we were bidding farewell to this holy month. Last Ramadan we had begged Allah to forgive us our sins and had promised ourselves not to return to those sins ever again. Many of us fell short in that and soon returned to our old ways after Ramadan. It is due to the vast mercy of Allah that he has granted us another chance to receive this year’s Ramadan so that we can turn to Him in repentance. How many family members, friends, classmates, and coworkers who were with us last Ramadan parted from us and are now buried in the soil beneath the earth?

The second article is by brother Jalal Abulrub: Ru`yatul Hilal (Moon-sighting): A Matter of Shari`ah, or a Matter of Astronomical Calculations?

From the article:

Shaikh-ul-Islam, Imam Ibn Taimiyyah, died several centuries ago.  Among the vast treasures of Islamic knowledge that he left behind for all Muslims to benefit from, is that he discussed the old/new annual Fitnah that divides Muslims regarding moon-sighting vs. astronomical calculations.  What he wrote on this topic is astoundingly contemporary, as if Ibn Taimiyyah is still living among us and witnessing the endless bickering between Muslims in the West, in specific, regarding when to start the Ramadhan and other religious seasons.

From brother Aboo Uthmaan‘s blog:

What follows is a translation by Br. Riyadh of a lecture which was delivered by ash-Shaykh ‘Abdul-Muhsin ibn Hamad al-‘Abbaad on Shawwaal 16, 1390AH at the Taybah Secondary School. It was also published in the Journal of the Islamic University of Madeenah, Issue #10. In it, the Shaykh discusses a few points about fasting and the month of Ramadan as well as …

From sister Bint Amina‘s blog:

Know, that in the fast (Sawm) is a special quality that is not found in anything else. And that is its close connection to Allaah, such that He says:
‘‘The Fast (Sawm) is for Me and I will reward it.’’

This connection is enough to show the high status of fasting. Similarly, the Ka’bah is highly dignified due to its close connection to Him, as occurs in His statement:
‘‘And sanctify My House.’’

Also from Bint Amina:

The gates of the heavens have been opened, the doors of Hellfire closed and our accursed enemy, the Shayateen, are locked up. Ramadhaan is upon us, the blessed month of mercy, forgiveness and compassion.

Indeed, we are in need of such a blessed month, so that we may immerse ourselves in the remembrance of Allah ta’ala after having been heedless, turn our sights to the Hereafter after having retreated to the dunyaa, read the Book of Allah after it has been untouched, collecting dust on our shelves. Surely our state is a distressing one; our hearts have become hardened, we have lowered our barrier of taqwa, chasing after our whims and desires somehow, we have become of those who are negligent.

One Response to With Ramadân Literally a Short Few Days Away …

  1. Abu Saeed says:

    assalam aleikom,

jazakallah khair for the articles; I was wondering how can we respond to those Muslims who say, “We don’t have any problem using calculations and timetables for prayer, why not for moonsighting? What is the difference?”
